Parent Visa

The Department of Home Affairs believe in the unity of family and provide a number of visas, both permanent and temporary, for Australian citizens or Permanent Residents who would like to be reunited with their parents. Such applications can be made onshore or offshore and that the Home Affairs has divided this visa scheme into several categories which are:

PARENT VISA (subclass 103)

Under this visa, a parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can move to Australia on a permanent basis provided that more of their children are residing in Australia than any other country. It is important to note that when a decision is being made on the application, the applicant must be outside Australia and that there is a 30-year processing time on this visa.

CRITERIA FOR THE SPONSOR

In order to be a suitable sponsor, one must have the following:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident or
  • eligible New Zealand citizen
  • must be aged 18 or more
  • agree to provide support, housing and financial help for the first 2 years the applicant lives in Australia

CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANT

  • must have an eligible sponsor
  • meet the balance of family test
  • have an assurance of support
  • meet the health and character requirements
  • have a health insurance
  • paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if any)
  • not have had a visa or previous application refused
  • Sign the Australian values statement

CONTRIBUTORY PARENT VISA (subclass 143)

Under this visa, a parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can move to Australia on a permanent basis provided that more of their children are residing in Australia than any other country. This visa allows a parent to work and study in Australia, be enrolled in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses. Parents, on this visa, can travel to and from Australia for 5 years and upon expiration of the 5-year term, would need to apply for and be granted a Resident Return visa (RRV) in order to be allowed entry into Australia as a permanent resident.

A condition of this subclass is that contribution be made by applicant which would amount to $47,755. However, such contribution is not to be made in a lump sum and that the amount is divided to be paid at various stages of the application.

CRITERIA FOR THE SPONSOR

In order to be a suitable sponsor, one must have the following:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident or
  • eligible New Zealand citizen
  • must be aged 18 or more
  • must have resided in Australia as permanent resident or citizen for at least 2 years

CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANT

  • must have an eligible sponsor
  • meet the balance of family test
  • have an assurance of support
  • meet the health and character requirements
  • have a health insurance
  • paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if any)
  • not have had a visa or previous application refused
  • sign the Australian values statement

CONTRIBUTORY PARENT (TEMPORARY) VISA (subclass 173)

Under this visa, a parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can move to Australia on a permanent basis provided that more of their children are residing in Australia than any other country. This visa allows a parent to work and study in Australia, be enrolled in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses. Parents, on this visa, can travel to and from Australia for 5 years and upon expiration of the 5-year term, would need to apply for and be granted a Resident Return visa (RRV) in order to be allowed entry into Australia as a permanent resident.

AGED PARENT VISA (subclass 804)

Under this visa, an aged parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can move to Australia on a permanent basis provided that more of their children are residing in Australia than any other country. It is important to note that when a decision is being made on the application, the applicant can be in Australia but not in immigration clearance and that there is a 13-year processing time on this visa. Aged Parents can travel to and from Australia for 5 years and upon expiration of the 5-year term, would need to apply for and be granted for an RRV in order to be allowed entry into Australia as a permanent resident.

CRITERIA FOR THE SPONSOR

In order to be a suitable sponsor, one must have the following:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident or
  • eligible New Zealand citizen
  • must be aged 18 or more
  • agree to provide support, housing and financial help for the first 2 years the applicant lives in Australia

CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANT

  • must have an eligible sponsor
  • must be old enough to receive pension in Australia
  • meet the balance of family test
  • have an assurance of support
  • meet the health and character requirements
  • have a health insurance
  • paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if any)
  • not have had a visa or previous application refused
  • sign the Australian values statement

SPONSORED PARENT (TEMPORARY) VISA (subclass 870)

This new stream became effective from 17 April 2019 and allows parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to be sponsored, for a temporary basis, to visit Australia up to 3 or 5 years. Although, a parent can, upon expiration of this visa, apply for further visa which can allow them to stay for a maximum period of 10 years, the subclass 870 is strictly a visitor visa and does no confer any work or study rights onto the parent.

CRITERIA FOR THE SPONSOR

In order to be a suitable sponsor, one must have the following:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident for at least 4 years or
  • eligible New Zealand citizen residing in Australia for at least 4 years
  • must be aged 18 or more
  • have not been unlawful or held a bridging visa, other than bridging visas A, B or C during the last 4 years
  • have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80
  • agree to comply with their sponsorship obligations
  • agree to share information where necessary
  • complied with previous sponsorship obligations (if any)
  • meet the character requirements
  • paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if any)

CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANT

  • must have an eligible sponsor
  • be the biological, adoptive, step-parent or parent in-law of the eligible sponsor
  • have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Australia
  • genuinely intend to stay in Australia on a temporary basis
  • meet the health and character requirements
  • have a health insurance
  • complied with previous visa obligations
  • paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if any)

CONTRIBUTORY AGED PARENT (TEMPORARY) VISA (subclass 884)

Under this visa, an aged parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can move to Australia on a temporary basis provided that more of their children are residing in Australia than any other country. The applicant will be granted a 2-year visa and that there is a government fee of $3,945 at the time of applicant and a fee of $29,130 before the visa is granted. Before this visa expires, the applicant can further make a payment of $19,420 which will allow them to be eligible to apply for the Permanent Contributory Aged Parent Visa.

In order to be a suitable sponsor, one must have the following:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident or
  • eligible New Zealand citizen
  • must be aged 18 or more
  • agree to provide support, housing and financial help for the first 2 years the applicant lives in Australia

CRITERIA FOR THE APPLICANT

  • must have an eligible sponsor
  • must be old enough to receive pension in Australia
  • meet the balance of family test
  • have an assurance of support
  • meet the health and character requirements
  • must not have a no further stay condition
  • paid back your debt to the Australian Government (if any)
  • not have had a visa or previous application refused
  • sign the Australian values statement
